A Growth Lesson From My Mentor

As part of the new partnership, we hosted a live event to sell our technology.

2010, I was recruited to a tech spinoff from an options fund. We had patented technology used by the fund that we were turning into a product.

Stolen Intellectual Property

Our CEO developed a technology that determined whether an exchange-traded asset was a good value. He wrote a book on this discovery prior to founding the company. One of those who read the book began implementing it for their trading services.

Partnering with thieves

When confronted, the company using the technology apologized, stating that they were not aware of the patent. Instead of threatening them with legal action, our CEO learned from their business model and soon partnered with them.

The big event

As part of the new partnership, we hosted a live event to sell our technology. The audience came from the other company. As the leader of the other company began to speak, we nervously watched the orders dashboard.

A quick win

Within thirty minutes of the online event, we sold $200,000 in product subscriptions. This experience improved our business model and allowed us to grow faster. The lesson is to have a partnership mindset, especially when finding product market fit.

Hope this helps
