Despite doing everything right, a startup must experience a lucky moment to scale. For Microsoft, this was the IBM PC. Zoom skyrocketed due to lockdowns. However, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, and others made their serendipity for rapid growth.

The moment

For every successful company, there is a defining moment when growth exponentiates. It can be external, like a large company knocking on your door with a check, or internal, like the perfect frame to send your market into a frenzy.

Building

While waiting for an opportunity is as likely as winning the lottery, you can create an advantageous moment. You do this by meeting potential customers and offering them value. Then, with each encounter, perfect your frame—the packaging around your product offering.

Crescendo

Just as a boulder rolling down a mountain begins slowly, so does serendipity development. However, at some point, when appropriately executed, growth explodes. I saw this with my first startup in 1998, where we began with a single sale and, within months, were doing deals with national chains.
