Enterprise AI Gets Real At Amazon
The company expects a reduction in its workforce over the next few years
On June 18, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent a straightforward internal memo to all employees, stating that with AI being rapidly implemented at scale and driving "efficiency gains," the company expects a reduction in its workforce over the next few years.
Some employees questioned whether the company had shifted to a "cost-cutting-first" mentality. Others expressed their frustration more directly.
The announcement did little to alleviate concerns about AI-driven disruption.
Instead, it sparked a wave of complaints across various internal Slack channels.
The most potent comment is, "Why is it that AI-driven layoffs never seem to reach the SVP level?"
The short answer is perceived value.
The longer explanation is that individuals at the Senior Vice President (SVP) level and higher typically contribute measurable impacts to the organization.
It is much more challenging to quantify the financial benefits provided by engineers or support staff compared to company leaders who consistently achieve their goals.
While I do not know Andy Jassy or why he chose those words for an all-hands message to staff, it is clear that Amazon is not the only corporation reducing headcount with Enterprise AI.
IBM, for instance, has cut its IT support staff by 50% and its global HR workforce by 25% due to the implementation of AI.
Comparus, a German consulting firm similar to McKinsey, has also reduced its human workload by 50%.
Surprisingly, employee satisfaction has increased as a result.
However, Enterprise AI is not a magic bullet for spectacular returns.
These companies took years to realize the benefits of their AI investments.
They endured the growing pains of high costs and minimal results before achieving a level where automation could consistently take place.
