What you need is the signal that the market wants what you have. Until this occurs, you do not have a business worthy of investment. Once the signal is identified, your company jumps in value to an investor.
Responsibility
Founders are responsible for discovering the buy signal before anything else. They accomplish this by framing the product to a specific customer desire.
For example, a bag of oranges appeals to value-conscious grocery shoppers, while the same oranges sold in individual wooden boxes are targeted at connoisseurs.
Framing
Every phone call, email, and content piece frames your product for a specific use case. Crafting the right message can be outsourced, but discovering the correct market must be done in-house by the founding team. Without it, no time or money will make a business successful.
Signals
A signal is money changing hands. Anything short of that is not proof enough of a market’s desire.
For example, before investing in an organic pest control company, I called those in my network who fit the customer profile. If just a few people had offered to pay for the service, then it would have been a signal worthy of investment.
