This Is What Happens When Perspective Changes

Many founders are focused on the result and miss the journey.

Many founders are focused on the result and miss the journey.

When meeting with a famous founder, I asked, "What am I missing," after detailing the struggles of the young company I co-founded.

"Take mental pictures," he explained.

Asking to elaborate, this successful entrepreneur explained, "Remember when you shared a hotel room with co-founders to save money." I laughed as he continued, "Savor the moments in your drab office."

At the time, he had an assistant with a clipboard and headset who constantly managed his time. "Your 10 o'clock is here," she said while opening the door to our meeting room. With that, I was given my choice of company swag and entered the elevator to leave.

Genius

When I first heard that advice, I wasn't sure it was genius. However, after several years and two more companies, I completely understand why this is so important. When you savor the struggles, you are telling yourself that this pain, hardship, and difficulty are for a greater purpose.

Champions

In sports, we see the struggles of startup life played out over months instead of years. For example, in 1983, NC State, under Jim Valvano, won the National Championship in basketball. Coach Valvano spent time during early season practices cutting down the nets as a team does after winning a championship.

Belief

While many may see practicing cutting the nets as silly, Jim understood that it must be believed before it can be achieved. Taking mental pictures builds the founder's belief that their dream can be achieved and practiced over time, solidifying the notion that it will be achieved.

Conclusion

Sometimes, it will be tough to believe that all problems, difficulties, and challenges will be solved and the company will grow toward the founder's vision. However, mental pictures are the first step toward believing. Take them at your lowest times with the understanding that one day, they will become fond memories.
